If you have applied for a loan through Mpowa Finance, you may have received a message asking you to authorise a DebiCheck request via your internet banking or mobile banking app. This is not spam - it is a required step before your loan can be released. Understanding what DebiCheck is and why it was introduced will help you complete this step with confidence.

What is DebiCheck?

DebiCheck is a new debit order authentication system introduced by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) to combat widespread debit order abuse. Under the old debit order system, unscrupulous merchants could raise debit orders against consumer accounts without proper authorisation - causing significant financial harm across South Africa.

DebiCheck changes this by requiring consumers to explicitly approve every new debit order mandate using their bank's own secure channels - your internet banking portal or mobile banking app. Once you approve the mandate, your bank stores the authorised terms and verifies each debit order against them before processing.

The system is mandatory for all registered credit providers in South Africa and applies to all new debit order mandates.

Why is DebiCheck Better Than the Old System?

Under the legacy debit order system, merchants submitted debit instructions to banks without any real-time consumer verification. This created an environment where fraudulent or incorrect debit orders were common, and many South Africans found unauthorised deductions on their accounts.

DebiCheck addresses this directly. Here is why it is a significant improvement:

  • You authorise before any money moves. No debit order can be raised against your account under DebiCheck unless you have personally approved the mandate through your bank.
  • Your bank verifies the details every time. Before processing each debit, your bank checks the collected amount and date against the mandate you approved. If they do not match, the debit is rejected.
  • You are protected from rogue merchants. Unregistered or abusive credit providers cannot raise DebiCheck mandates - the system requires formal registration and compliance with the SARB's rules.
  • Your authorisation is secure. The mandate is authenticated through your bank's own security infrastructure - the same channels you use to transfer money or pay accounts.

How DebiCheck Works with Your Mpowa Finance Loan

When you are approved for a loan with Mpowa Finance, a DebiCheck mandate request is sent to your bank to authorise the repayment debit order. You will typically receive a notification from your bank prompting you to log in and either approve or decline the request.

This step is essential - Mpowa Finance cannot release your loan funds until your DebiCheck mandate has been successfully authorised.

To ensure same-day payout, you must authorise your DebiCheck mandate:

  • Monday to Friday: before 4pm
  • Saturdays: before 11am

If you miss this window, your loan will still be processed - but payout will move to the next available business day. To avoid delays, log into your internet banking or mobile app as soon as you receive the DebiCheck notification.

How to Authorise Your DebiCheck Mandate

The exact steps vary slightly between banks, but the general process is the same across all South African banking apps:

  1. Log in to your internet banking or mobile banking app.
  2. Look for a notification, inbox message, or a dedicated DebiCheck section (often under "Debit Orders" or "Payments").
  3. Review the mandate details - lender name, amount, and debit date.
  4. Approve the mandate if the details are correct.

If you do not see a notification immediately, check your bank's DebiCheck or pending mandates section directly. Some banks also send an SMS with a link to authorise. If you are unsure, contact Mpowa Finance on 0861 228 228 and our team will guide you through the process.

What Happens if You Decline the Mandate?

If you decline the DebiCheck mandate, the loan cannot proceed. Your application will not be finalised, and no funds will be transferred to your account. If this was a mistake or you declined in error, you can contact Mpowa Finance directly and we will assist with reissuing the mandate request.

DebiCheck and Responsible Lending

Mpowa Finance's use of DebiCheck reflects our commitment to responsible, transparent lending. As an NCR-registered credit provider, we follow all SARB and National Credit Regulator requirements - and DebiCheck is a key part of that compliance framework.

The system protects you as a borrower just as much as it protects lenders. Because every repayment debit is verified against your approved mandate, you are never at risk of an unexpected or incorrect amount being collected from your account.
